The importance of aeronautical data changed significantly with the implementation of area navigation (RNAV), performance-based navigation (PBN), airborne computer-based navigation systems and data-link systems. Corrupt or erroneous aeronautical data can potentially affect the safety of air navigation. The aim of aeronautical data management is to ensure the flow of the aeronautical data required for the safety, regularity, economy and efficiency of international air navigation.

To achieve this, all countries which form part of EUROCONTROL's area of operations exchange their airspace and aeronautical data through a centralised system specifically designed for this task. The centralised system for aeronautical data management in Europe is called the European AIS Database (EAD). As the largest Aeronautical Information System (AIS) in the world, this centralised reference database contains quality-assured aeronautical information and provides a fully integrated, state-of-the-art AIS solution. It consists of three main components:

  • static data operations (SDO)
  • international notice to airmen (NOTAM) operations (INO)
  • published aeronautical information publication (AIP) management system (PAMS)
