Special report: the Grimsvötn eruption and its impact on European air traffic

May 2011

The Grimsvötn Icelandic volcano erupted on Saturday 21 May at 19:30 CET. Less than 24 hours following the eruption, its ash plume rose up to 17km in the air and strong winds dispersed the ash cloud towards the European continent. Its impact is however more limited than that of Eyjafjallajokull in April 2010.
