EUROCONTROL contributes to award-winning Runway Status Lights project

7 March 2017

At the World ATM Congress in Madrid today, the IHS Jane’s air traffic control (ATC) Award in the 'Safety and efficiency on the runway and final approach' category was awarded to the Runway Status Lights (RWSL) system, which was implemented last year at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport.

EUROCONTROL supported the Direction des Services de la navigation aérienne (DSNA), the French Air Navigation Service Provider, and the Groupe Aeroports de Paris (ADP) on this project.

Bob Graham, the Head of the SESAR Airport Research Unit at EUROCONTROL, commented “EUROCONTROL is proud to have supported DSNA and Charles De Gaulle in the SESAR Runway Status Lights (RWSL) research project.  It is really motivating that this research has been deployed and now provides an additional runway safety net at one of Europe’s major airports, contributing to EUROCONTROL’s strategic runway safety improvements.”
