The integration and full utilisation of advanced ATM systems has been part of our strategy since the beginning of operations, helping to introduce some of the industry’s most innovative breakthroughs to cope with growing operational density and complexity.
But our pioneering spirit would not have materialised without the remarkable receptiveness of air traffic controllers to constant system evolutions and innovation. Furthermore, maximum synergies between engineering and operational resources ensure that all new solutions meet the controllers’ system requirements for safe and efficient services.
Every day, we work closely with our customers and partners to find new ways of improving operational performance through enhanced technological solutions and innovations. All these new technologies play a major role in preparing for the vision encapsulated in the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR). Early deployment of high added-value systems and forward-looking operational concepts is key to our future performance, to our neighbouring ANSPs and to the entire European network.
- Flight Data Processing System (FDPS): MUAC’s FDPS continues a long tradition of fielding advanced concepts and integrating them in a coherent operational entity.
- Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC): An air/ground data link application which enables the exchange of clearances, SSR code changes, changes of frequencies, etc. between controllers and pilots.
- Towards I4D (initial four dimensional) operations: A natural evolution for MUAC of the CPDLC message set. I4D introduces the capability of having the airborne trajectory downlinked via ADS-C for further use by the ground systems.
- Enhanced Mode S: This is the first stage in making use of air-derived data (ADD) in the form of downlink aircraft parameters, either directly to the controller or to air traffic management systems.
- Integrated Flow Management Position (iFMP): Using trajectory predictions from both the Network Manager’s system and the local flight data processing system, the iFMP anticipates the traffic situation in the light of occupancy and entry rates as well as complexity counts up to 6 hours in advance.
- Manpower planning - TimeZone: A tool that we use at MUAC to support the full planning process.
- Radio Direction Finder (RDF): The system accurately calculates an aircraft’s position on the basis of its radio transmissions and helps reduce call sign confusion, read-backs from wrong aircraft or crossed transmissions.
