As AIS migrates to AIM and then SWIM, the Aeronautical Information Domain is changing in parallel into a paperless environment. Geographical Information System (GIS) technology has facilitated this trend from the beginning and it still does.
SkyView2, discontinued as of 1 January 2015, was used as a proof-of-concept viewer of spatial ATM information, successfully fostering the use of open geo-referenced aeronautical information based on the OpenGIS (OGC) specifications and the ISO19100 standardisation framework. ISO19100 standards are now being referred to in ICAO standards and recommended practices. They were used as part of early SWIM developments such as the D-AIM project, the SESAR R&D programme and the regular OGC test beds run globally.
Open source applications - such as Quantum GIS, Gaia, Udig, or those found on the OSGEO website - can be used to replace SkyView2. These applications are maintained by their respective communities. EUROCONTROL does not provide support for them but is willing to help with questions.
